The Kirk Dam is an important habitat for wintering wildfowl with up to 60 Whooper and 30 Mute Swans present some winters (Jan 2012). Large numbers of duck including Mallard, Wigeon, Teal, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye and the odd Gadwall also winter here along with the resident Coot and Moorhen. It is the only site on the island for Water Rail, a breeding species, and occasionally a rarity such as Scaup, Shoveler or Gargany (April 2000) can be found.
