What we did on our holiday in the West
Shopping and hill walking or hiking are among the top activities undertaken by visitors to the wider Glasgow region, according to the latest regional research from VisitScotland.
The Scotland Visitor Survey 2023: Wider Glasgow published today (Wednesday 26 June) by the national tourism organisation found 38% of respondents said they had visited the shops while in the area.
This was closely followed by hillwalking, mountaineering, hiking or rambling (35%), visiting a castle or fort (34%), visiting a country park or garden (29%) and visiting a heritage or visitor centre (27%).
Among the Wider Glasgow sample which covers areas North and South Lanarkshire, East and West Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde and East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire, 79% said scenery and landscape were the top reasons for choosing to visit Scotland. History and culture followed in second place (49%), with outdoor activities coming in third (32%).
70% of the Wider Glasgow respondents were repeat visitors to Scotland, with the majority (73%) coming from other parts of the UK.
The Scotland Visitor Survey usually takes place every three or four years but was delayed due to the pandemic and was conducted in 2023.
It aims to help understand why visitors take a holiday or short break in Scotland and how they rate their experiences when here.
Visitors were surveyed in-person between March and October last year, and then responded to an online survey when they returned home.
Lynne Cooper, Regional Director at VisitScotland, said: “The Scotland Visitor Survey provides valuable insight for everyone involved in tourism and events.
“It is fantastic to see that our diverse landscapes, excellent food and drink and rich history and culture have all inspired visitors.
“Understanding the motivations and experiences of visitors is essential in developing our region as a must-visit, must-return visitor destination.
“We will continue to work with businesses and partners to enhance the area’s tourism offering and ensure it is at the forefront of visitors’ minds.”
