2023 UCI Cycling World Championships - Mountain Bike Downhill

Gearing up for Greatness

Scotland prepares for ‘tourism chain reaction’ as world’s biggest cycling event begins.

Speaking ahead of the official opening of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow and across Scotland, VisitScotland Chief Executive, Malcolm Roughead, said: “We are now on the starting line of the world’s biggest ever cycling event. For the next 11 days, we have a fantastic and unique chance to show 8,000 elite and amateur competitors, around a million spectators and TV audiences across the globe, why Scotland is made for cycling.

“It will not only be the finest cyclists on show but also Scotland’s tourism and events industry, world-class venues and famous hospitality.

“An event of this scale and prestige will undoubtedly cause a tourism chain reaction. Every time visitors – whether here for a day or longer – use a restaurant, order a drink at the bar, or buy a souvenir to remember their experience, they’re contributing to Scotland’s valuable visitor economy, creating jobs and sustaining communities.

“This unmissable event represents an exciting opportunity to grow cycling tourism in Scotland, encouraging more people to consider cycling as an activity, in turn boosting the nation’s health and wellbeing.

“We want to position Scotland as a leading destination for cycling tourism and the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships will give us the momentum to do that.”
