Scotland’s summer of golf tees off in East Lothian


The Genesis Scottish Open is set to tee off next week (7th July, 2022) bringing an estimated 70,000 golf fans to Scotland’s Golf Coast.

Taking place at the Renaissance Club in East Lothian, it is set to be the strongest staging of the event in its history, with nine of the top ten players in men’s golf teeing it up as part of the historic co-sanctioning of the event by the PGA Tour and DP World Tour (formerly European Tour).

It is the fourth consecutive year that the tournament is taking place The Renaissance Club and the sixth time the event has been held in East Lothian, delivering significant economic benefit to the region and Scotland as a whole, ahead of this year’s spectacular summer of golf which sees five major golf tournaments take place over five consecutive weeks including The 150th Open at The Old Course in St Andrews in July. 

The region which boasts 21 courses within 30 miles of coastline is set to benefit from another major tournament this summer when Muirfield hosts the AIG Women’s  Open in August, with around 36,000 golf spectators expected to attend. 

The economic value of golf tourism to East Lothian is more than £20 million and it supports more than 600 jobs. 

As well as delivering significant economic benefit, the national tourism organisation hopes the event will also entice more female golfers to Scotland’s world-famous courses. 

VisitScotland Regional Director Neil Christison said:“Golf is one of Scotland’s major selling points to visitors with a passion for sport, with no other country able to match our history or heritage in the game. This exposure is vital if we want to maintain global interest in Scotland’s golf offering and encourage enthusiasts, both men and woman, to make Scotland their number one choice for a golf break.”

Tourism businesses and organisations are set to benefit from East Lothian’s significant role in the summer of golf. 

Scotland’s Golf Coast received funding through VisitScotland’s Destination & Sector Marketing Fund to help encourage domestic visitors to the region. Bob Gunning from Scotland’s Golf Coast Steering Group said: ”It’s an exciting year for golf tourism on Scotland’s Golf Coast. With two major golf events – the Genesis Scottish Open again at The Renaissance Club in July and AIG Women’s Open for the first time at Muirfield in August – the eyes of the golfing world will be on East Lothian providing the region with an unprecedented level of exposure. 

“Scotland’s Golf Coast, the golf tourism marketing alliance comprising golf clubs and accommodation providers, has successfully navigated the past couple of years with support from the VisitScotland Destination and Sector Marketing Fund, with members now reaping the rewards of that resilience and endeavour. 2022 is already proving to be a strong year, but our primary focus is now ensuring 2023 and beyond is even better. A robust, varied, and flexible marketing strategy across all online and offline channels will optimise the high-level profile of the two major championships so that our website users, database numbers, enquiries and hopefully resulting bookings will all see an increase throughout this period.”

Scotland’s summer of golf which sees five major golf events staged across five consecutive weeks gets underway with the Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in East Lothian. It is followed by The 150th Open at The Old Course in St Andrews from July 10-17. The Senior Open  presented by Rolex takes place at Gleneagles in Perthshire from July 21-24 and then the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open is being held at Dundonald Links in North Ayrshire from July 28-31. The final event is the AIG Women’s  Open at Muirfield from August 4-7.
